Local House Builder on Course for Record Year
Norfolk house builder Abel Homes has announced that it has already sold more homes in 2015 than it did in the whole of 2014 – itself a record year for the company.
The Watton-based company says the strong sales figures demonstrate the strength of the new homes market in the county – and in particular high demand for well-designed family homes in smaller-scale developments.
The family firm is currently building on two sites: hus46+ at Watton, where it has this month released the final phase of 101 highly-sustainable new homes; and at Swan’s Nest in Swaffham, where 82 new family homes are being built.
Work is due to start in the autumn at a new site in Hingham, where Abel Homes will build 88 new homes, and the firm has announced plans to build 98 homes on a second site in Watton.
“2014 was a record year for us in terms of number of houses sold, and so we are delighted that we have already surpassed that figure, even though we are only two-thirds of the way through 2015,” said Abel Homes managing director Tony Abel.
“Demand for new homes, and especially well-designed, energy-efficient family homes, is very strong, and we are building as fast as we can to keep up with that demand. That is great news for construction jobs, for the local contractors with whom we work, and for the wider economy as a whole.
“It is generally accepted that each new home supports the equivalent of two full-time jobs for a whole year, so a healthy construction sector means the overall economy benefits too.”
Mr Abel said that he believed smaller-scale, local house builders were in a particularly strong position.
“Today’s buyers also want to move into a human-scale community, with aesthetically pleasing houses and plenty of open space. If we were building huge developments of high-density, identikit housing, I don’t believe we would be seeing the amazing demand that we are experiencing right now.”
